Obituary

Stephen Conroy, 69 of Hamden, formerly of New York, and Hartford, died suddenly March 31st at home. Born June 4, 1953 in Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late John & Ellen Conroy. Stephen worked for many years in Property Maintenance. He was predeceased by siblings John, Coleman, Mary, and Winnie Conroy. Steve was maintenance manager for various properties in New York state, Manchester, CT and Hamden, CT.  He was gifted in many areas of maintenance, building, and carpentry. He always prided himself in the work that he did. Of the various places of employment he held throughout his life his eight year employment and staff residency at the Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center in New York state was his favorite, most memorable, and most meaningful. It was there that he experienced love, respect, and support from the community who saw his value as a human being.  He maintained the buildings and grounds of the 134 acre retreat center,  He utilized all his manual skills and managed many volunteers who donated their time, skills, and abilities.  He was liked and respected by those with whom he worked and he established strong relationships there. Steve met life's challenges with an open heart and steadfastness. It is hard to put into words the depth of this man who struggled so long as a young person living in the Bronx to feel accepted. He was caring of others and had a generous spirit. He often did without to give to someone else.  He was a good friend to many and loved spending time with them. He was adopted into the family of his long time friend Linda and was welcomed with open arms. He loved children and for several years played Santa Clause for the annual family Christmas parties. He became a grandfather to Linda's grandchildren and are loved by them. He was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed traditional Celtic music and some of the traditional foods. However, his favorite food by far were pasta, and especially lasagna, followed by rice pudding. He was not a cook by any means but loved to eat out at the diner with his friends. Steve has touched the lives of many. He has remained in the hearts of those who knew him and will be missed so very much. All services will be privately held.
