Richard F. Galya, 94 of Woodbridge, formerly of Stratford died peacefully May 17th with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Irene Miko Galya to whom he was married to for over 70 years. Born in Bridgeport, son of the late Frank & Catherine Hayostock Galya, Richard worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer for New England Design and several local major corporations. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War, and was a member of the Marine Corp. League, supporting their Toys for Tots program. He was a proud member of the Catholic Slovak Sokols. Richard was an avid woodcarver and enjoyed fishing and golfing. He held the title of the first Mr. Bridgeport 1948 & Mr. Connecticut. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Elene (Robert) Perkowski of Milford, Janet (Marcella- MacDonald) Galya of Andover, Dianne Urban of Naugatuck, and Paula Galya of Coventry, a brother Raymond Galya of Virginia, a sister Pauline (Thomas) Moycik of Stratford, grandchildren Andrew (Maya), Brian (Melissa), and Jessica (Robbie), and great grandchildren Juniper, Arlo, Benjamin, and Victoria. He was predeceased by a son Gregory Galya, a son-in-law Gregory Urban, brothers John & Julius Galya, and a sister Agnes Gombar. Calling hours will be held FRIDAY from 10 - 11 am in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 81 Center rd Woodbridge, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 am. Burial will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
