Obituary

Olivia Vaca Sarosario, 78 of Hamden, passed away suddenly at Yale New Haven Hospital on July 5th, 2024. Olivia was born on January 27, 1946 in Manila, Philippines to Joaquin Montilla Vaca & Aniceta Cruz Estorres. She graduated from St. Rita's College in Manila. Olivia emigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1974 where she lived until she moved to Connecticut this year.  She was trained as a respiratory therapist and worked in several hospitals and long-term care facilities in Chicago until her retirement in 2011.  Ate Ollie, as she was known to her colleagues at work, was looked up to as she mentored new respiratory therapists.  She loved what she did and took pride in the care that she provided for her patients, whether in a hospital or in a long-term care facility. Olivia was lovingly called "Mana", by her grandchildren and was called Ate/Tita Ollie, by her family, friends and colleagues.  Mana found joy in providing for her family and friends.  She often brought home cooked food to work to share with her coworkers.  She prepared her family's meals every day before working second and third shifts.  Her pork sinigang and beef mechado were family favorites.  She shared her love of cooking with her children by teaching them how to cook these traditional Filipino dishes to perfection.  She instilled the values of loyalty, love, and family.  Mana had special moments and activities with each of her children.  Emerson learned how to polish wood floors back home in the Philippines by watching Mana dance with a "bunot"(a crude device made out of coconut husks) while music blared from the radio.  After her retirement, when he and his family would visit Chicago in the summertime, they would celebrate Emerson and Marc's July birthdays, usually at Texas de Brazil or Longhorn Steakhouse.  Mana enjoyed the moments when her entire family was together.  She lived with Melissa/Mimi, her daughter, for over thirteen years in South Elgin, IL.  They had their daily routine of breakfast conversation, hair and nail appointments and weekly visits to Costco.  Mana and Michelle had weekly visits to the Filipino grocery store and spent that time talking as Mana shared new kwentos(stories).  Mana especially loved sharing her fandom of the Chicago Blackhawks with Marc.  You could always find them sporting Toews or Kane Blackhawk jerseys.  They even went to a few Rockford Ice Hogs games, which was the minor league affiliate of the Hawks.  She loved life!  She had great faith and kept prayer books and tiny religious icons in her purse.  Mana donated to many Catholic Charities and institutions.  Mana loved word search puzzles, Candy Crush and Fishdom.  She spent many afternoons scrolling through Facebook and posting inspirational quotes and pictures of puppies on her page.  In honor of her great love for Elvis Presley, Mana named her Bichon Frise, Elvis, whom she took on a pilgrimage to Graceland.  Mana had so many Elvis collectibles, including a plate collection which was her pride and joy. Olivia is the loving Mother to Miguel V/Emerson (Brenda) Sarosario, Melissa/Mimi(predeceased) (Roderick) Jao, Michelle (Andrew) Spejcher, and Marc Sarosario (Heather Lohse). She is a devoted Grandmother to Dylan and Emily Sarosario, Cassandra and Xander Jao, and Jennifer and Jolina Spejcher.  Dearest Sister to Antonio Vaca and Elizabeth Vaca-Obena(predeceased).  Olivia is also survived by her former husband, Miguel C. Sarosario, Sr. A beloved aunt to a multitude of nieces and nephews throughout the world.  She leaves behind her loving puppies, Eva & Maxi Poo Poo. The family would like to recognize and thank the staff of the Cardiac ICU at Yale New Haven Hospital most especially, Dr. Elliot Miller, Kiara Goldwag, APRN and Amanda Pinto, RN for the compassionate and skilled care provided to Olivia while under their care. Interment will be done at a later date in her final resting place in Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
