It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Michel Jean-Baptiste on May 11th at the age of 77. Dr. Michel, a native of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, was born in 1947 to Italia (Sperduto) Jean-Baptiste and Sylvestre Jean-Baptiste. At a young age, Michel demonstrated a relentless work ethic, passion for learning and academic excellence, graduating from Moses Brown High School in 1965 and Harvard Medical School in 1974. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he started his career in neurological surgery. Dr. Michel later returned to Haiti, where he founded, JBs Orphanage and served for over a decade as the Medical Director of Hospital Albert Schweitzer. After years of serving as a surgeon and medical director, Dr. Michel shifted his focus to Psychiatry, earning his credentials from Yale University where he completed his residency in 2001. Michel committed over 15 years to serving patients at Yale New Haven Hospital & Saint Raphael before launching his private practice in Woodbridge, Connecticut. With over 50 years of experience, Michel was beloved by his patients and their families. While he was a respected psychiatrist, his family also remembers him as a devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love for his family, Futbol (Soccer), and music was unparalleled. Above all, he cherished spending quality time with his loved ones. He is survived by his wife Merlene, his brother Sylvestre, his children, David, Alain, Getro, Jeffrey, Desmith, Mikerline, Rebecca, his grandchildren, Charlotte, Elijah, Solomon, Maxwell, Isabelle, Ari, Ira, Rai, Wallyha and his great granddaughter Isabelle with another granddaughter on the way. Michel was predeceased by his parents, Italia and Sylvestre Jean Baptiste and his daughter Mireille (Jean-Baptiste) Schwartz. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that anyone wishing to honor Michel, consider making a donation to his distinct legacy, the JB orphanage. Calling hours will be WEDNESDAY May 22nd from 8:30 - 10:30 am in the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. A Parlor service will be held at 10:30 am in the same location.
