Mary Prati DeLizio, 86, of Hamden, died November 14,, 2016 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Magnolia, OH, April 13, 1930, the daughter of the late Massimo and Rosa Boschi Prati and step-daughter of the late Grace Prati. She was married to her husband, John for 57 years. Mary resided in Ohio graduating from Lorain High School where she served as the school majorette. She relocated to Hamden, CT in 1950 upon marriage.
Mary owned and operated Mary's Beauty Salon in Hamden for 30 years. She was a member of St.Ann's Church and was involved in many church activities all her life. Mary served on the church board and worked in the soup kitchen as well as the bingo fund raisers. She also volunteered as a reading tutor in the New Haven Public School system.
She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. You were always welcome in her home and she was known for her cooking and kind, gentle way. Mary was a person of varied interests. She participated in competitive dancing with her husband, was an avid tennis player belonging to several local tennis clubs, had a love for music and played the piano, enjoyed extensive travel, going to Broadway, watching baseball games, especially her grandsons' sporting events, and recently, playing dominos weekly with friends.
She is survived by her children, Dr. John (Lisa) DeLizio, Jr. of Woodbridge and Richard DeLizio of Hamden, a sister Margaret Messmer of Pompano Beach, FL and a brother, William (Patricia) Prati of Tuscon, AZ, and loving grandmother of Matthew DeLizio of Woodbridge. She was pre-deceased in death by her husband of 57 years, John DeLizio, Sr., a grandson, Jonathan Martin DeLizio and siblings John Prati, Katherine Tozzi, Elena DeLizio, and Ann Kapron.
Funeral Friday at 10:15 from the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden and at St. Ann's Church at 11 o'clock. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 8 - 10:15 A.M.. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Smilow Cancer Center. Mary's family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of the Smilow 7Th floor Infusion Unit for their exceptional care and compassion.
