Marie G. Balash Caliendo, 81, of Hamden, passed away peacefully at Conn. Hospice April 22, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Jerry Caliendo. Marie was born in Danbury, Jan. 2, 1933, the daughter of the late John and Marie Surovy Balash and was a LPN at the former Grace New Haven Hospital and at Whitney Manor for over 20 years prior to retirement. She enjoyed bingo, the casino and cooking for her family and friends and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Women of Carmel Council and the Sokol Club. She is survived by her children, Maria (Robert) Fiorentino of North Haven, Madeline (Charles) Piasecki, Louis (Kathryn) Caliendo and Kathleen Caliendo, all of Hamden, her sister, Irene Rotella of Danbury, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, a cousin, Joanie Underwood of Danbury and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by siblings, the Rev. John Balash Jr., Clarence Balash and Ann Bagley. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 o'clock at Christ Lutheran Church, 600 Shepard Ave., Hamden, with the Rev. Owen Sanderson officiating. Interment in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven.
