John Joseph Ricardo, M.D., of Cheshire, died suddenly on December 3, 2021. He was 65 years old. He was the son of the late John R. and Gloria Botte Ricardo of Hamden, both of whom predeceased him. Dr. Ricardo was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, West Haven. He earned a B.A. from Columbia University and an M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine. John's medical career spanned thirty years. He served in the position of Medical Director at State of Connecticut hospitals for seventeen years and was semi-retired at the time of his death. John is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen Zarkades; a son, Andrew John Eaton Ricardo of Cheshire, CT and Edinburgh, Scotland; a daughter, Hayley Elizabeth Eaton Ricardo and her husband, Dr. Nitin S. Jha, of Edinburgh, Scotland; his aunt Natalie Mona (Frank) of Orange, and Uncle Richard Salzano of Branford. He was predeceased by his aunts Marjorie Salzano and Marie Townsend. Dr. Ricardo is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lesley Zarkades; sister-in-law, Dena Lisle; brother-in-law Neil Zarkades (Nicole), a nephew and a niece, all of Beverly, MA; and by his niece Carrie Lisle Klimek, of Bellefonte, PA. John's delight was in being with his family. He spoke German and Italian fluently. He was an accomplished pianist, a student of Paul Rutman. He loved playing piano duets with his children, who had grown up hearing their dad playing early in the morning and well into the night and therefore could both sing and recognize the music of Brahms, Debussy and Chopin before they were old enough to learn to play.
John enjoyed traveling overseas with his wife and children, attending piano recitals and the opera, indoor gardening and walking. He had an encyclopedic command of information related to classical piano, opera, and historic performances in those areas. He had a love of New York City architecture and could draw, from memory, the floor plans of many of its grand apartment buildings. He was a talented physician who was wholly committed to the patients he served. Donations in John's honor may be made to Doctors Without Borders, at
