Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Angela Guarino Mendillo who departed peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital on September 13, 2025, at the age of 95. Surrounded by her loved ones, she left this world with warmth and the same strength that defined her life. Born in Cerreto Sannita, Province di Benevento, Italy on July 19, 1930, Angela lived a life marked by love and devotion to her family. Daughter of the late Salvatore and Maria Grazia (Parente) Guarino, she was a pillar of strength, taking on the motherly role at young age of 7 to her siblings Antonia, Antonio, AngeloAntonio, Rinaldo, Maria, Guido, Vincenzo, and Antonietta. In her youth she met the love of her life, Luigi Mendillo, a man whose devotion matched her own resilience and warmth. Together they built a beautiful life, first in their homeland and later immigrating to America where they sought a better future for their children. She was a devoted Catholic and longtime communicant of St. Ann's Church, where she was an active member of the St. Rita Society.  She dedicated years working as a master seamstress for private clients at her home and for Duckster Sportswear and then worked as a quality control operator for U.S. Surgical until her retirement. Married to Luigi for 44 years, they created a life of immeasurable impact raising their beautiful family which she was most proud of. She is survived by her three daughters, Annamaria (Frank) Proscino, Dr. Giuseppina (Paul) Violano, and Grace (Dr. Carmen) Balzano. A loving Nonna to her grandchildren who were the light of her eyes; Lisamaria (Chris) Groleau, Antonio, Giuseppe, Alessandro Proscino, Paul Violano, Cristina (Mario) Baggio, Marcella (Fiancé Robert Bartnichak), Giana (Fiancé Hugo Andrade), Daniela Violano, Dr. Lisa (Louis) Puglisi, Daniela (Todd Taylor) Balzano and Gianluca Balzano. She was especially proud to be a Grande Nonna to her great granddaughter Ava Sophia Groleau and loving Godmother to her godchild Laurie Martin. Angela loved her family unconditionally and there was no greater joy than serving the best tasting food to her family. Angela could whip up anything at a moment's notice. Whether it was her homemade pizza, pasta with Genovese sauce, or traditional tomato sauce and meatballs for Sunday dinner or a one-of-a-kind meal when someone stopped by for a quick visit, no one left hungry or without a goodie bag to take home. Her specialty was making cookies for every celebration, making sure each was precisely made and wrapped with perfection. She was a force to be reckoned with and made an everlasting impact on all who were lucky enough to know her. May her memory be a blessing and a guiding light for us all. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 8 - 10 a.m in the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden.
